FaceApp is a mobile application for iOS and Android developed by Russian company Wireless Lab which uses neural network technology to automatically generate highly realistic transformations of faces in photographs. The app can transform a face to make it smile, look younger, look older, or even change gender. FaceApp was launched on iOS in January 2017 and on Android in February 2017.
A "hot" transformation was previously available in FaceApp, but following criticism and accusations of "racism" that it lightened the skin color of black people and made them look more European, was briefly renamed "spark" and then removed. In response to the controversy, Yaroslav Goncharov, the founder and chief executive of Wireless Lab, said "We are deeply sorry for this unquestionably serious issue. It is an unfortunate side-effect of the underlying neural network caused by the training set bias, not intended behaviour." He added that a "complete fix" was being worked on. On August 9, 2017, FaceApp once again faced criticism when it featured "ethnicity filters" depicting "White", "Black", "Asian", and "Indian". Yaroslav Goncharov immediately removed the filters from the app.
The gender change transformations of FaceApp have attracted particular interest from the LGBT and transgender communities, due to their ability to realistically simulate the appearance of a person as the opposite gender.
